October 21, 2009
Yorba Linda – The woman who struck an 80-year-old bicyclist was released by Brea police after she tested negative for alcohol and was cleared of any drunken driving violations.
Linda Denise Christie, 46, was given a series of field sobriety tests after the incident and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a Brea police officer said.
However, further investigations showed that Christie was not under the influence and she was later released.
According to Brea police, the accident occurred at about 5:40 pm when the white Chevrolet pickup that Christie was driving hit the bicyclist while she was turning left from West Imperial Highway onto Prospect.
The elderly bicyclist, identified as Edelgard Owens, was brought to Placentia-Linda Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Early reports indicate that Owens crossed against a red light while Christie had the green arrow when the accident occurred.
