BIG RIG ACCIDENT: Woman Seriously Injured after Wrong-Way Driver Collides with Big Rig

February 4, 2010

Livermore- A woman has been seriously injured after a wrong-way driver suddenly collided with a big rig that was carrying about 42,000 pounds of contaminated soil along eastbound Interstate 580.

According to reports, a 2005 BMW driven by Beiru Chen, 52, form Saragota, was heading west in the left lane when the vehicle swerved, skidded, and spun about 180 degrees before colliding with a big rig that was moving in the right lane. The incident occurred near North Flynn Road in the Altamont Pass.

Chen was brought by helicopter to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley to receive treatment for major injuries that were seen as non-life threatening.

Authorities said the back of Chen’s vehicle was totaled and the accident’s impact caused contaminated soil to be spilled onto the roadway. Eastbound lanes were closed while the mess in the area is being cleaned up.

It was stated that alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the collision. Authorities are trying to know how the BMW ended up moving along the wrong direction.
