January 28, 2011

Ventura - A Ventura County jury has granted $49 million worth of damages to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer and the family of a deceased motorcyclist in a truck accident lawsuit, news reports said.

Jurors have awarded Anthony Pedeferri with $39 million worth of damages in a truck accident suit filed at Ventura County District Court. Pedeferri sustained head and spine injuries in a December 2007 truck accident and was left quadriplegic.

The CHP officer filed a lawsuit against a truck driver after crashing onto his patrol car and a motorcycle at US Highway 101. The truck driver pleaded guilty for to charges of Driving under Influence (DUI) and drug trafficking. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

According to accounts, CHP officer Pedeferri had just asked a motorcyclist to pull over when the truck driver suddenly crashed onto them. Andres Parra, the motorcycle rider, died instantly after the crash.

The Ventura County jury has awarded Parra's family with $10.2 million for losses.
