PLANE CRASH: Ultra-light Plane Crashes near Mojave, Pilot Severely Injured

February 6, 2011

Ridgecrest – A small plane crashed near Mojave shortly after it took off, causing critical injuries to its pilot Sunday morning, according to authorities.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Department said that the home-built, ultra-light aircraft took off from a remote desert location and crashed just before 11:30 am.

It reportedly encountered mechanical problems and crashed near the Mojave landfill, despite the pilot’s efforts to bring the plane to a landing location.

Kern County Fire Department crews had to use the Jaws of Life to cut the pilot out of the plane. He was air-lifted to a local hospital and is said to be in critical condition. Total loss to the aircraft is estimated at $60,000.

The accident has already been reported to the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
