PLANE ACCIDENT: Two separate plane crashes leave pilots dead
July 2, 2010
Southern California – Two pilots were killed after two separate plane crashes occurred within hours of each other Thursday.
In the afternoon, a single-engine Cessna 182P crashed on Catalina Island after its pilot radioed that he was possibly having a heart attack. The plane plummeted into a terrain two miles northeast of Catalina Airport, according to Lt. Jeff Donahue of the LA County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash caused a fire across 20 acres of land, which needed the help of about 100 firefighters and three helicopters to put out. Firefighters were able to find the pilot’s body after putting out the flame. No one else was found.
Later that day at around 6 p.m., another single-engine small plane crashed nose-first near the eighth hole of the Penmar Golf Course in Venice, Los Angeles. The Federal Aviation Administration said that a Cessna 152 had just taken off from Santa Monica Airport.
According to authorities, the pilot may have been practicing landings at the airport when the plane experienced engine problems. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene, and no one else was on the plane. No injuries on the ground were reported either.
Authorities have not yet released the names of both pilots.
