Two People Sustained Moderate Injuries after Vehicle Swerves off Road
October 12, 2009
Harbison Canyon - Two men luckily escaped from electrocution but sustained moderate injuries when their car swerved off a road in East County and sheared off a power pole and fire hydrant.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) Brian Pennings, the two men were riding a 1986 Toyota Supra. The vehicle was moving towards north on Harbison Canyon Road at an excessive speed.
The 22-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and it smashed on the road’s east side where it turned over, said Pennings.
According to Cal Fire Capt. Daryll Pina, firefighters who responded at the site spotted a 25-foot geyser of water coming out of the hydrant, making the entire area flooded. Live power lines also draped across the ground and the vehicle.
Pina said both men went out of the vehicle and sat along the side of the road. They were brought to a hospital.
Firefighters failed to get to the water shut-off valve because of the live wires. They had to wait for a San Diego Gas & Electric crew to arrive at the area.
Lines to three houses were removed and the water was running down into the houses. Residents were moved by firefighters to their properties’ dry grounds, said Pina.
