PLANE CRASH: Twin-engine Plane crashes in Oceanside, Pilot killed
July 27, 2010
Oceanside – The pilot of a light twin-engine aircraft was killed after it crashed on a field behind San Luis Rey Elementary School, Tuesday morning.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the crash occurred near State Route 76 and North El Camino Real around 11 a.m. The plane burst into flames and spread all over the field.
The Beechcraft Baron 95-B55 reportedly took off from the nearby Oceanside Municipal Airport minutes before the accident, a dispatcher said.
Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said the plane was in “obvious distress” and that witnesses claim it went under power lines. The pilot may have been trying to go back to the airport to make an emergency landing.
No structures were damaged and people on the ground were safe. However, the pilot of the plane was declared dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
San Diego Union Tribune reported that the plane belongs to San Clemente couple Edward and Lorraine Judd. FAA records show that Edward Judd is a certified airline transport pilot and flight instructor. There are no certification records for Lorraine Judd.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
