RAILWAY ACCIDENT: Train Accident in Keene Sparks Tunnel Fire

February 22, 2010

Keene – Two freight train cars got derailed in the tunnel entrance of the Tehachapi Loop 15 last Saturday night.

The derailed train sparked a fire that ignited the cars, which were carrying alcohol, pellets, and cornmeal.

The blaze spread into the tunnel making it difficult to be put out.

Kern County Firefighters had to evacuate several homes as black smoke clouded nearby communities.

Firefighters finally doused the stubborn fire south of the town of Keene Sunday night, almost 24 hours after the fire started.

Several families who were evacuated were already informed that they could safely return to their homes.

As of writing, there were no reported injuries related to the train accident.

Authorities are still monitoring the situation and are looking out for smoke inhalation cases within staffs and nearby residents.
