VEHICLE COLLISION: Three Injured After Fire Engine Collides with Car; Loud Music Blamed
February 9, 2011
Rancho Cordova – At least two firefighters and a motorist were injured after a fire truck collided with a car on Mather Field Road Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The firemen were on their way to respond to a medical emergency when the accident happened around 10:30 am. The truck was traveling north on Mather Field Road and had its lights and sirens on, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District’s Engine Company 66.
It was near Highway 50 when the truck encountered the car, which was exiting the westbound-off ramp. Fire Department said the car stopped in the middle of the intersection when he noticed the fire engine approaching. The fire truck driver tried to prevent crashing into the car but failed.
The motorist suffered moderate injuries and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center. The two firemen, meanwhile, were taken to Kaiser North Medical Center for minor injuries. Investigators said the motorist had loud music on, that is why the driver was unable to hear the fireman’s siren.
Fire district spokesman Capt. Christian Pebbles reminded motorists to yield right of way when they see or hear an emergency vehicle. Motorists should pull over to the right shoulders or go right as far as traffic allows, and stop. Emergency vehicles like fire trucks should be in the No. 1 or left lane.
