Bishop – At least three people died, including two recent graduates, while several others were injured in a collision between a sport utility vehicle and a university van Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Authorities are yet to release the name of the casualties, but the website of Cathedral Catholic High School of Caramel Valley said that the recent graduates killed were Amanda Post and Natalie Nield. The driver of the van, California Baptist University cheerleading coach Wendy Rice, also died.
According to the CHP, a Ford SUV was traveling southbound on US Highway 395 to return to San Diego after a training camp in Mammoth. The vehicle veered over the center line and into oncoming traffic, overturned and collided with the northbound university van before bursting into flames.
Five people were inside the SUV, including Drew Delis, 22, and Derik Thomas, 19. Thomas, who suffered severe burns, was also a recent graduate of a school in Caramel Valley. Both were sent to the hospital.
The van was part of a caravan from California Baptist University that was on its way to the same camp attended by the SUV’s occupants, according to reports. The training was for students who will become assistant coaches.
At least sixteen other people in the van were injured; three of them had to undergo surgery. Other occupants of the SUV are said to be in critical condition. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
