BIG RIG ACCIDENT: Third big rig accident on I-15 in two weeks causes traffic jam

October 5, 2010

San Diego – Interstate 15 became the scene of a big rig accident for the second week after a backhoe hit an overpass beam Tuesday noon, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred around 12:30 pm when a backhoe being hauled by a flatbed, which apparently is positioned too high, struck the support under Carroll Canyon overpass in the Miramar area. The truck tumbled onto the roadway.

No injuries were reported but the southbound lanes were closed as engineers inspect the overpass and crews did repairs and cleanup. The overpass beam was shifted forward slightly from the impact but not damaged, said Caltrans spokesman Ed Cartagena.

Some witnesses also claimed that a vehicle struck the excavating machine after it fell onto the interstate. All lanes were reopened at 2:45 p.m., although heavy traffic remained in the area.

The overpass is one of the lowest structures along I-15 at 15 feet, Cartegena added. Last Tuesday, a construction accident on the overpass also caused shutdown at the same location. And last week, a large metal beam hanging from the overpass caused heavy traffic.
