TRUCK ACCIDENT: Tanker filled with inflammable gas overturns on Highway 91
May 28, 2010
Corona – A tanker truck, reportedly hauling two trailers filled with 8,800 gallons of compressed argon gas, overturned and exploded along a freeway bridge in Highway 91’s eastbound lane just east of Green River Road Friday morning.
The accident was reported to the CHP around 10:30 a.m. Blaze and smoke shot up, reaching almost 200 feet in the air. Corona and Riverside crews help put out the fire.
According to witnesses, the accident started when a Honda Accord swerved to avoid the truck and went over the center divide into the westbound lane. This caused the truck to “jack-knife” across the freeway and crash.
The highway was closed in both directions for hours, causing delay to motorists. CHP and Caltrans officers detoured motorists on westbound to Highway 71, while eastbound drivers were diverted to Green River Road Drive. Westbound lanes were re-opened before 3 p.m.
No injuries were reported so far, even the truck driver was able to get out safely.
