PRODUCT LIABILITY: State DPH Warns Consumers on Salmonella in Lettuce
November 5, 2010
Sacramento – The California Department of Public Health has warned consumers from buying and eating red leaf lettuce produced from an Oxnard farm, after tests conducted found that they contain salmonella.
The state department said the lettuce were mostly sold at three small grocery chains namely the Numero Uno in southern California, the Cardenas Market stores in the Inland Empire, and the Canton Food Market on Alameda Street in Los Angeles.
Although some of the contaminated batches of lettuce have already been pulled out from the stores, the agency asked consumers to dispose the lettuce, or return it for refund. It also urged consumers who may have been sickened by the product to consult with their doctors.
The symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Young children and the elderly are more at risk for severe illness caused by salmonella.
