PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT: Skateboarder suffers head injury after hitting SUV
June 2, 2010
Chico – An unidentified man crossing the streets of East Avenue on a skateboard was struck by an SUV Tuesday night.
The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on East Avenue near Chuck E. Cheese when the skateboarder, who is possibly in his late teens or early 20’s, suddenly darted in front of a Dodge Durango driven by an unnamed woman.
Sgt. Scott Ruppel of Chico Police Department said that "the driver didn't see the skateboarder until the last moment, so she swerved to the right to avoid colliding with him." The man hit the SUV’s hood and his skateboard was broken in half.
The man was taken to Enloe Medical Center where a trauma team was standing by. He reportedly suffered major head injuries, mainly because he was not wearing a helmet when the accident happened. Any information about the skateboarder and his condition are not available yet. The woman driving the SUV and her son are safe, but the woman was extremely shaken.
Police closed East Avenue between Cohasset Road and North Avenue while conducting investigation. Authorities are reminding pedestrians to use the crosswalk since accidents often occur around East Avenue.
