BIG RIG ACCIDENTS: Santa Cruz commuters caught in traffic caused by two accidents
August 17, 2010
Santa Cruz - Two unfortunate accidents on two different highways have caused heavy traffic early Tuesday morning for the commuters from Santa Cruz.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first incident occurred around 7 a.m. at the Big Moody curve, north of Santa Cruz-Santa Clara county line when a big-rig overturned and its trailer toppled over across both northbound lanes of Highway 17, shutting the lanes down for five hours.
The driver luckily was not hurt, CHP officer Grant Boles said. Commuters were forced to take back roads through the mountains. Lanes were reopened at 12:06 p.m.
The second accident happened at around 10 a.m. on Highway 9 at Sanborn Road where an overturned gravel truck added to the congestion and caused vehicles in both directions to take turns sharing the open lane.
There were no spills on the roadway but workers were still trying to upright and remove the truck off the road as of noon.
A Sig-Alert was issued at 7:15 a.m., but it was too late because many drivers have already been caught up in the gridlock.
