PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT: Samaritan killed along Sacramento Highway 99

May 13, 2010

Sacramento – A man who tried to help a driver involved in a car wreck along the northbound lane of Highway 99 was hit and killed, Thursday morning.

Robert M. Alverson, 49, stopped to help a man whose car hit the median near Mack Road around 5:30 a.m. He was hit by another car and the impact threw him onto the southbound lane where he was struck again, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley.

The freeway was closed for almost three hours due to the incident.

Both drivers pulled over after hitting Alverson. Bradley said that the first driver was investigated for driving under the influence but the police do not consider him to be at fault, while the second one could not avoid hitting the man.

Police found Alverson’s car along the side of the freeway.
