Oceanside – A 23-year-old suspected drunk driver was arrested early Monday morning after causing a multiple vehicle collision on Interstate 5 which resulted to the death of his 9-year-old passenger, the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports indicate that the Los Angeles girl was riding on the back seat of a northbound Lexus at around 1 a.m. when the driver did not notice the slowing down of traffic as they approached closed lanes caused by an on-going construction.
The Lexus driver, Michael J. Wright Jr., then swerved and hit a Dodge Caliber and a Honda CR-V before crashing into the back side of a big rig. He was arrested on multiple charges including DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The girl was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital where she died of major injuries.
The rig driver was not injured while the Dodge driver suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Honda CR-V was brought to the hospital to treat his moderate injuries.
