November 9, 2009
San Diego – A 63-year-old bicyclist died after he was hit by an approaching police car near an intersection Monday morning.
Investigators said that the man got off the parking lot of a gas station and was heading on a south bound bike lane when he turned and cut onto the path of an oncoming police car at around 7 am along Genesee Avenue.
Reports indicate that the bicyclist was on his daily route to University City when the accident happened. He was wearing a vest with reflectors and a helmet which was thrown off because of the collision. He died at the scene.
The police officer, on the other hand, was not hurt. He was to respond to another accident and was going less than 45 mph when the collision happened.
The officer is now on a paid administrative leave as police continue to investigate the accident.
