RAILROAD ACCIDENT: Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Amtrak in Downtown LA Station

March 9, 2010

Los Angeles – Metrolink services were disrupted Wednesday morning after a person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 6:20 am at Santa Fe Avenue and 8th Street, near the 6th Street Bridge. The train that struck the unidentified victim was traveling from Los Angeles to San Diego, according to Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Lydia Leos.

The victim was pronounced dead just before 6:30 am. Initial findings show that the victim may have been a transient, but authorities could not confirm if it was a man or a woman.

No one among the 30 passengers and crew members aboard were hurt, said Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole. However Metrolink routes, specifically Orange County lines 601, 603, 605, and 683, and Riverside County lines 701 and 703, were delayed due to investigation.
