December 28, 2010
Desert Hot Springs – A police officer has struck and killed a pedestrian Monday night while on his way to respond a call, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Reports said the on-duty officer was driving south in the fast lane of Palm Drive around 10 pm when the accident happened.
The victim, later identified as John Howe Jr., 57, from Corona, was crossing the road between Cahuilla and Desert View avenues when he was struck by a 2008 Ford patrol vehicle.
Howe was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 44-year-old policeman escaped injuries. According to CHP Spokesman Officer John Quintero, Howe was wearing dark clothes and was not in a crosswalk when the accident occurred, but it was not yet clear whether the officer saw Howe or not.
Quintero also said that the policeman was probably driving at about 45 mph in an area with the speed limit of 35 mph. The officer is put on paid administrative leave while investigation is going on, Desert Hot Springs Police Cmdr. Dan Bressler said.
