Pedestrian Accidents: Vulnerable Elements of the Road

The roadway harbors many elements. From the high speed of certain small vehicles, to the shining spectacle of luxury cars gracing the roads; from the roars of the trucks, and the silent sweeping of the SUV’s carrying families aboard; and from the innocent bicycles traveling flexibly to their destinations, to the slow but healthy pedestrians crossing the road and preferring a walk.

Poetics aside, from everything that has been enumerated, the one element that is the most vulnerable is the pedestrian. Pedestrian accidents account for 11% of the total vehicle fatalities on the road, with it comprising the second largest number of fatalities in roadway accidents in 2005.

The figures may have been long past, but it is actually the latest and largest data available for statistical analysis, and its significance is not diminished since it shows that quite a number of accidents concerning pedestrians have occurred, putting accident-loving cities like Los Angeles in a bad light. Simple logic works why pedestrian accidents are very dangerous:

1. Pedestrian Vulnerability

Pedestrians are the most protectively naked on the road. In comparison to large vehicles such as trucks, trailers, etc., and even smaller vehicles like the SUV, the car, your typical Volkswagen, pedestrians are not shielded with metal and alloys. If a car hits a pedestrian, damage has been done for sure. The extent of which depends on the strength of the impact.

2. Vehicle Speed

Physics will tell you that there are two types of collision, the elastic and the inelastic. Although inelastic collisions (imagine a ball sticking onto the wall) are fairly common in roadway accidents, its worst example is perhaps a speeding vehicle dragging an already vulnerable pedestrian on the road while still speeding along the road. The amount of pain is virtually unimaginable.

3. Disobedience of the Law

Sometimes it is not really the driver’s fault why a pedestrian accident had happened. The simple violation of the laws of jaywalking could already elicit a very dangerous result in the form of serious damages in the part of the pedestrian. However, comparative negligence may reduce the driver’s liability for the accident.
