Santa Rosa, CA – A 5-year old boy was killed while his father was seriously injured after being involved in a truck accident on Bennett Valley Road Tuesday.
The accident happened at about 9:30 a.m. on a tree-lined stretch of Bennett Valley Road, approximately five miles east of Santa Rosa, when an oak tree snapped off from its base, crushing their truck.
The tree smashed into the driver’s side of the truck, killing Nicholas Musser-Kirby and seriously injuring his father, Michael Kirby, 43.
The boy’s mother, Diane Musser-Kirby, and a 5-year-old girl who were also riding with them, sitting on the truck’s passenger side, got away uninjured.
According to California Highway Patrol, the large oak tree also took down power lines and blocked the road.
Nearly an inch of rain fell in the area between Monday and Tuesday mornings, which may have been a contributory factor to the accident.
