PERSONAL INJURY: Non-profit Group Provides Defensive Driving Lesson to Teenagers

March 14, 2010

Pomona - In an effort to curb the increasing number of vehicular crashes, a non-profit organization has conducted defensive driving program for teenage drivers who are the most prone to accidents among all the age groups.

The program BRAKES (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) is a three-hour training that teaches teenagers about defensive driving and ways to recognize a potential crash.

In June, this program will also take place in Southern California and will be offered in other states.

Former Hot Rod Association racer Doug Herbert spearheaded the program after losing two teenage sons in a fatal crash.

“This program will teach young drivers that there is an edge. With this, they will know the importance of being on the safe side of that edge”, Herbert said during an interview.

To allow teenagers to experience a dangerous situation firsthand, instructors used various methods to distract them while they were driving.

BRAKES is offered to teenagers aged 15 years and older and must be accompanied by their parents.

According to a government study, about 6,000 teenagers are killed in traffic collisions every year in the US.
