RAILROAD ACCIDENT: Metrolink Train Claims Third Fatality for this month
September 20, 2010
Riverside – An unidentified homeless male, in his 40s, died after being struck by a Metrolink train Monday morning, according to authorities.
The accident happened around 5 am between the Riverside and Pedley stations, Metrolink spokeswoman Angie Starr said. Witnesses claimed the man walked onto the northbound tracks between Mountain View Road and Jurupa Overpass.
Riverside police Lt. Bruce Blomdahl said that engineers sounded a horn and tried to stop but it was already too late. The man turned his back to the train and bent over at the waist.
The unnamed man died on the scene.
No one among the 150 passengers and two crew members of the train was hurt. Train number 401 was on its way to downtown Los Angeles from Riverside when the accident happened. Passengers were taken to the nearby train station by buses.
The lines were reopened before 8 am. Investigators suspect that the man committed suicide.
This is the third accident that has happened on the Metrolink rails for September. Previous incidents on September 9 and 16 also ended fatally.
