July 15, 2011
Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ordered Metrolink on Thursday to pay $4.2 million each to families of killed victims in the 2008 Chatsworth crash.
According to reports, the LA Court judges awarded $4.2 million each to families of 24 killed adult victims. The parents of the deceased young people were also granted an average of $1.2 million as damages. At least 98 injured passengers were given $12,000 each.
The award damages already exceeded the $200 million cap stipulated in the Amtrak Reform and Accountability Act of 1997, reports said.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Train Engineer Robert Sanchez had been texting and failed to stop on red light that triggered the collision with a Southern Pacific train in Chatsworth on Sept. 12, 2008.
