Bicycle Accident: Mayor Villaraigosa’s Surgery Successful after Bike Accident
Los Angeles - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing a surgery for his fractured elbow following a bicycle accident on Venice Boulevard Saturday, reports said.
The Saturday night accident reportedly occurred on the bike lane between Hervey and Hargis streets while the mayor was riding with his security detail shortly before 7pm. A taxicab was said to have abruptly pulled right in front of the mayor causing him to quickly apply his brakes, fall from the bike, and break his elbow.
The mayor hit his head first in his fall but was wearing a helmet and so no head trauma was sustained. He was taken to UCLA Medical Center where he was treated and prepared for the next day’s operation.
The mayor’s office has earlier said that the taxicab driver did not break any traffic laws but was not cautious enough as he moved in front of the mayor without using signal lights. No charges are expected to be filed against the cab driver who stayed at the scene after the accident.
The mayor returned to work Monday with his right arm in a cast.
