June 9, 2009
San Francisco, California - A man was seriously injured when a horse mauled him on Monday evening near Fisherman’s Wharf, according to authorities.
The injured horse handler, whom authorities did not name, was sitting in a chair when the animal ran loose and trampled him.
Police said the man was brought to San Francisco General Hospital and was in critical condition for sustaining multiple injuries.
Meanwhile, the horse ran loose for 20 minutes and knocked off a woman who was riding a bike. Police said the victim was not seriously hurt.
The San Francisco Animal Care and Control Department said the horse was just “spooked” and there was no animal maltreatment, neglect, or abuse which could have prompted the horse to show aggression.
A veterinarian treated the horse before returning it to its stable in Petaluma.
