Brain Injuries: The Underlying Causes

Accidents usually occur with immense casualties and injuries being elicited to those who are involved. Some of the most serious injury that a person can acquire is perhaps the brain injury.

Why is a brain injury serious? Simply because a brain injury is practically an injury ofthe rest of the body. Remember that the brain is akin to the Central Processing Unit of the body. The moment that the central processing unit is damaged, the rest of the bodily functions will fail or will diminish its functions.

Take for example, the incident where vision is lost when the occipital lobe of the brain is damaged. This commonly occurs when the victim suddenly fell and hit the back of his skull hard enough to induce internal trauma such as bleeding or a coup injury.

Another example is the possible loss of hearing in the side of head where a possible temporal brain damage occurred. This happens when the head trauma hits the side of the head where the temporal lobe, the final destination of the auditory nerve, is located.

A serious physical trauma to the brain, whether it is blunt trauma or penetrating injury, usually results to the death of nerve cells, brain infection, or bleeding resulting to blood clots on the brain. Sometimes the damage is even severe enough to cause the patient to slip into a coma, a minimally conscious state, or a vegetative state.

Some of the prerequisites to serious brain injury are the following:

1. Bleeding If bleeding occurs, there is a chance for clots to form in the brain. These clots can detach away from the wound and travel to other parts of the brain, forming an “embolus” which could cause ischemia on certain parts of the brain.

2. Direct Tissue destruction If the accident is penetrative, then direct tissue damage is inevitable. This type of damage pertains to absolute destruction of brain tissue due to direct force being applied onto it.

3. Increased Intracranial Pressure Damage can be induced also if enough pressure is exerted on the cranium, causing the brain to fold against the tremendous force. This tremendous force could cause the brain to herniate, i.e. to seek other means to relieve the pressure. Brain herniation is a very serious medical emergency.

Los Angeles Brain Injury lawyers could give monetary solutions to compensation claim involving a serious brain injury causing either of the three enumerated above.
