Hit and Run Kills Toddler, Injures Brother
September 13, 2009
A one-year-old girl was killed after the wagon that she and her brother were on was hit and was dragged on for more than a mile by a hit-and-run driver Friday night, authorities said.
Kaylee Alvarez with his brother was being pulled by her parents on a crosswalk at Redondo Avenue and 10th street when a vehicle hit them and never stopped.
Alex Alvarez, the father of the victims, reported that he and his wife were walking near their residence when a vehicle knocked them down and continued to run as bystanders watched in horror the wagon jammed on the wheels of the vehicle.
After running a block, the driver stopped and the 2-year-old Oscar fell off and was picked-up by a bystander as the vehicle continued to run a mile before stopping in front of his house.
As he pulled over his driveway, neighbors reportedly saw a police officer look under the vehicle and discover the body of Kaylee Alvarez with shards of wagon still on her body.
Oscar Alvarez remains to be under treatment for his cuts on the head and second-degree burns on his back.
The suspected driver, Neely Lejon Dinkins, 33, was arrested later that night on charges of hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, driving with a suspended license, and DUI.
