March 2, 2011
Bakersfield – A man in a wheelchair was injured after an unlicensed driver slammed into him and fled away from the scene Tuesday, authorities said.
The accident occurred around 7 pm at the intersection of California Avenue and Myrtle Street. The unnamed, wheelchair-bound man was going down the street when the car hit him, according to police.
Witnesses called 911 immediately after the crash. According to one witness, she saw the car parked over an island and the wheelchair shattered. The man was left trying to get up but she told him to stop moving.
The man in the wheelchair suffered moderate injuries. The driver who took off after the crash later returned to the scene, admitted to hit-and-run accusations, and was arrested. He said he drove away from the scene because he was driving with a suspended license.
