VEHICLE ACCIDENT: Herd of Goats Caused Accidents, Injuries on Interstate 5
February 28, 2011
Sacramento – A portion of Interstate 5 had to be closed Saturday evening after a herd of goats ended up on the road, and caused a series of car crashes and injury to one driver, authorities said.
The animals escaped through a broken fence from a property near Galt located three miles away from the interstate, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
Some drivers were unable to avoid the goats, resulting to death of dozens. Officers were also forced to put down goats that were alive yet severely wounded.
A female driver was injured when some goats walked onto the southbound lanes of the freeway, near the Twin Cities Road off-ramp. She was taken to a hospital by ambulance due to minor injuries.
CHP spokesman Alex Manciu said the goats may have travelled all day along the riverbed to get to the freeway. The animals that survived were already returned to their owner, Terry Adams. He is now cooperating with the officers’ investigation of the incident.
Manciu said criminal charges are unlikely to be filed against Adams, but that is still uncertain since the case is still under investigation.
