TRUCK ACCIDENT: Firefighter hit by pickup during fundraiser

May 7, 2010

Santa Fe Springs - A 53-year-old firefighter collecting donations from passing drivers was injured after being hit by a small pickup truck, Thursday morning.

The accident occurred along the eastbound lane of Valley View Avenue and Alondra Boulevard. He was trying to reach the sidewalk when the traffic light turned green and the pickup truck swooped in, according to Whittier police officer Mike Dekowski.

Dekowski added that the truck had the right of way so the driver is not at fault. The firefighter may not have seen the truck coming.

The unnamed firefighter was immediately taken to UCI Medical Center. He is now in stable condition.

The Santa Fe Springs firefighters have been participating in the annual "Fill the Boot,” a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, for the last seven years, which explains why there were firefighters along Valley View and Alondra, as well as at Telegraph and Carmencita roads intersection.
