PRODUCT LIABILITY: FDA Warns Consumers Over BPA Exposure
January. 18, 2010
New York - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a warning to consumers about the use of some household products found to contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical which have been said to cause diabetes, cancer, obesity, early puberty, and other diseases.
In a statement, FDA cited new studies about the “subtle effects” of BPA especially on the brain development of fetuses, infants, and younger children.
However, product advocacy group American Chemistry Council said the chemical, which is found in thousands of household products, “has not yet been proven harmful to adults and children.”
“If the federal agency believed the BPA was not safe, it would have issued stronger regulations”, Lisa Harrison, the council’s representative said.
Meanwhile, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) believe that BPA “is a threat to human health” in high levels and prolonged exposure.
Since manufacturers are not required to label their products containing BPA, thus making it impossible to avoid this chemical, some NIH officials advise people to “limit their consumption of canned foods and plastic containers which have the number three or seven on the bottom.”
