CHAIN ACCIDENT: Drunk Driver Caused Fatal Chain Accident
August 4, 2010
Sacramento – A suspected drunk driver has caused a chain accident that has killed a motorcyclist near Winters Tuesday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
A 50-year-old driver identified as Thomas M. Roberts of Newark was said to be travelling along the southbound lanes of Interstate 505 when, for unknown reasons, he hit the center median at about 10 pm.
The impact sent Roberts’ vehicle to a guardrail over Putah Creek before it came back to traffic and was rear-ended by a car. The two disabled vehicles blocked the lanes when another vehicle hit them.
The motorcyclist, 48-year-old Oscar Alfaro, tried to avoid the pileup by going through the shoulder lane when he lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown into the creek.
Alfaro died at the scene and Roberts was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. All three drivers sustained minor to moderate injuries.
The lanes were closed for some time as authorities investigated the accident.
