Dog Bite Prevention starts with the Dog-owners
Dogs are what man calls his best friends because of their cuddly, lovable and protective nature. One might even think that if people turn away from them, dogs would not. But what if these cute and cuddly little creatures turn into a monster and become man’s worst enemies.
It is very surprising that statistics are, in fact, staggering with 4.7 million dog bites occurring in the U.S. each year. 92% of these attacks are caused by male dogs and 94% of the dogs who caused the attack were not neutered. Aside from that is the astonishing figure that two-thirds of these dog bites occur in the victim’s property or when the victim knows the dog. Additionally, 58% of human deaths involve unrestrained dogs in the victim’s property.
Always remember that all dog breeds can bite because it is in their nature, and in order to reduce the number of dog bites, responsible breeding and ownership, public education and enforcement of existing laws are the more effective ways.
However, in order to train their dogs to behave properly, it is important that the owners do the following in order to prevent their dogs in biting anyone:
• The owners must spay or neuter their dogs since it reduces aggression especially in males. Un-neutered dogs are 2.6% more likely to cause dog bites.
• The owners must supervise their dogs because lonely dogs may feel uncertain and defensive, and may bite someone.
• The owners must train their dogs, and let their dogs socialize in order to get used to the presence of another person aside from the owner. It will reduce tendency for a dog to bite someone.
• The owners must not forget to restrain their dogs. According to the statistics, 24% of total dog attacks involve loose dogs that are not on their owner’s properties.
• Owner must use fence in guarding their dogs. It is in their nature to bite and tethering and chaining them is not a good idea since it will result to the increase in their stress, protectiveness and vulnerability, thus the increase in aggression of the dog.
