PRODUCT RECALL: Contaminated Angus Beef Patties Mistakenly Shipped to CA Recalled
January 19, 2011
Vernon – The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) has announced Tuesday the recall of nearly 7,875 pounds of fully-cooked Angus ground beef steak patties that are suspected to be contaminated with the Listeria bacterium.
The patties were manufactured by Vernon-based company United Food Group. During their year-end inventory, the company discovered that the product was accidentally shipped to a single distributor in California for further distribution to institutional customers, instead of being held in their warehouse.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria found on the patties, can cause serious infections and may even lead to death of young children, frail or elderly people, or those with weak immune systems.
Each package of the product had the establishment number "EST. 31835" inside the USDA mark of inspection. It was produced on October 11, 2010 (use-by date "10-11-2011") and marked with either "LINE #31" or "LINE #32."
Both federal officials and United Food Group have not received any reports of illnesses associated with the product yet. FSIS characterized the recall as Class I, but added that “the product has been used and is no longer available in commerce."
