Charges Filed against Injured Mother after Crash

October 7, 2009

Lakeside - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has filed charges of child endangerment and felony driving under the influence against a mother of three after she and her children were involved in an accident.

According to CHP Officer Brian Pennings, a 2004 GMC Yukon being driven southbound on Channel Road by Michelle Niemiec, 34, from El Cajon, ran at a stop sign along the T-intersection with Julian Avenue.

Niemiec smashed into a dirt embankment along the south area of the avenue. She sustained major injuries, which include two broken ankles. The woman, who was found not wearing her seatbelt, was brought to a hospital, said Pennings.

Meanwhile, her son, age 7, and two daughters, ages 9 and 5, were at the back of the vehicle with their seatbelts on when the accident happened. The children were brought to Rady Children’s Hospital to receive treatment for minor to moderate injuries.

According to Pennings, the mother failed to stop because she was intoxicated. She seemed to be under the influence of drugs.
