BOATING ACCIDENT: California Teen Sailor on World Sailing Tour Missing
June 10, 2010
Los Angeles – The family of 16-year old Abby Sunderland, the California girl who wanted to sail solo around the world, has asked authorities to help locate the girl who was believed to be lost at sea.
A spokesman for the family said the teen sailor is feared to be lost after communication was cut off and her emergency beacons started signaling.
The young girl left Los Angeles County’s Martina del Rey on January 23 to set a record of becoming the youngest person to sail non-stop around the world alone. In April, she gave up after encountering equipment problems and had to stop for repairs.
She left Cape Town, south Africa on May 21 and believed to be somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean.
