BIG RIG ACCIDENT: CHP officer hurt in another accident

July 1, 2010

Palm Desert – Another accident involving a California Highway Patrol officer happened on Interstate 10 Thursday morning, a CHP information officer has confirmed.

According to CHP Officer Tami Low, a patrol car was struck by a big rig near Washington Street when it was trying to merge into lanes while responding to a call for assistance.

Judging from the vehicle’s damage, it seems that it was hit hard from behind. Gayle and Ken Dibble, a couple who witnessed the crash, said that the patrol car’s tail was “up in the air” and that they saw it “hit the guard rail and spin about five times” before finally stopping.

The couple said that the unnamed CHP officer tried to merge into the number one or fast lane. A big rig gas tanker could not avoid hitting the car, the witnesses added.

The officer, who has been working with the agency for less than a year, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center after suffering minor to moderate cuts, but is expected to survive. The driver of the big rig, meanwhile, seems to be okay.
