Big-Rig Driver Who Caused Crash on Highway 242 Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

August 26, 2009

Contra Costa – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported the arrest of the driver of a big rig truck carrying about a dozen crushed vehicles which crashed along Highway 242.

The driver, Humberto Hernandez, 34, of Antioch, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He was uninjured after the crash and will be booked into County Jail in Martinez after further medical evaluations.

The accident happened at 4:40AM in the morning when the driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and his trailer flipped. The crushed cars he was carrying got scattered along the highway into the right shoulder and the rig cab was left in one of the right lanes.

A 21-year old man from Antioch, who was driving nearby struck the center divider when he tried to avoid the crash site. He was not injured.

Because the side of the road was littered with crushed cars, the clean-up will take time and the traffic is expected to be slow in the area.
