BICYCLE ACCIDENT: Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Metro Blue Line

January 20, 2011

Long Beach – A bicyclist was killed after getting hit by a Metro Blue Line train near Wardlow Road Thursday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses saw the cyclist, a Hispanic man around 30 years old, traveling eastbound on Pacific Avenue at about 1:46 pm. He went around the gates and passed in front of the northbound train as it nears Wardlow Station.

LA Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Lt. Suzan Young said the witnesses assumed that the bicyclist may have went around the gates intentionally, or simply was not paying attention.

The victim was dragged several hundred feet and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other people were reported injured.

Trains were detoured from the station for several hours after the incident. Buses were used to transport passengers between Wardlow and Willow stations.
