Baby Hammock Recalled Over Suffocation Risk

December 8, 2009

Washington - After the death of two babies due to accidental suffocation, about 24,000 hammock-like baby beds have been recalled Tuesday by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In a statement, the CPSC said the thousands of Amby Baby Motion Beds were recalled due to suffocation risk to infants who may be wedged against the hammock’s mattress pad.

“Because the hammock is tilting side-to-side, it may cause a baby to roll and become trapped on its side and may result to suffocation”, CPSC warns.

The consumer agency received two deaths linked to the recalled products this summer.

The recalled products, which were manufactured by Minneapolis-based Amby Baby USA, resemble a baby swing that hangs from a spring and moves sideways, back and forth, or up and down. The company said the beds mimic the movement of babies inside their mothers’ womb.

Meanwhile, safety advocates said the safest baby beds are cribs with firm bottom and immovable sides and no gaps or cutout where infants can be trapped.
