CAR CRASH: Atwater Man dies after Crashing into a canal
May 19, 2010
Winton – A 68-year-old unidentified man was killed Wednesday morning after his 2005 Chevrolet Colorado crashed into a canal on Shaffer Road.
CHP Officer John Patterson said that the man, who was a resident of Atwater, was driving along the northbound side of Shaffer Road, north of Palm Avenue at approximately 65 miles per hour. He was driving behind a 1990 International flatbed/trailer driven by Francisco Ochoa, 40.
The Chevrolet drove into the opposite side in order to get pass Ochoa. But when the cars going southbound started approaching, the man went back to the lane. The Chevrolet’s right rear hit the left front side of the big rig. This caused the Colorado to spin clockwise onto a canal bank and hit a wall. The vehicle eventually submerged into the canal.
Ochoa and the other people driving along Shaffer helped to get the injured man out of the car. Rescuers sent him to the Memorial Hospital in Modesto, where he was pronounced dead later. Authorities are still investing ating the cause of the accident.
