July 31, 2009
Bay Point – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported that a 7-year old girl from Bay Point was badly hurt after running into the path of a full-sized pickup truck which struck her.
According to the CHP, the accident occurred near Riverview Middle School and about a half-mile from Rio Vista Elementary School at the intersection of Pacifica Avenue and Anchor Drive at 7:25 AM.
CHP Officer Tom Maguire said that the girl was with her mother and older sister and that they were walking to school along Pacifica Avenue. Police say that the little girl, for reasons unknown, suddenly darted into the road and ran south across lanes of traffic.
The driver of the pick-up truck, a 45-year-old Pittsburg woman tried to swerve to avoid hitting the girl but was not able to do so in time. The driver sustained no injuries. Officer Maguire said that the woman will not be charged or even cited as she did not do anything wrong.
Authorities, who did not release the name of the girl, have reported that she suffered a serious head cut along with several broken bones. She was airlifted unconscious to UC Davis Medical Center and while she has regained consciousness, she remains to be in a serious condition.
