Glendale, CA - An 11-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a vehicle in a crosswalk in front of the Glendale middle school last Wednesday.
Meri Nalbandian, a sixth grader from Glendale middle school, was dropped off by her mother at a well-marked crosswalk on Glenwood Road, between the middle school and Herbert Hoover Senior High School just near Mark Keppel Elementary School, when a sport utility vehicle hit her at around 8 a.m.
Many have witnessed the accident, including Meri’s mother and a number of children.
Meri was taken to Glendale Adventist Hospital and was pronounced dead.
According to officials of the Glendale Police Department, the woman, 38, who was driving the SUV, had dropped her child off at Kepel moments before the accident.
The woman was looking away from the crosswalk and was driving at about 10 miles per hour when she hit Meri, who was also looking in the opposite direction, Glendale police spokesman Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.
The driver of the SUV has been cooperating with officials for the investigation and was not taken into custody.
